Quite a while back, we had a discussion regarding the Arab Spring. (I searched for this thread without any luck; for some reason I only got five pages of my latest posts with the search.) Anyway, quite a few forumers were very optimistic regarding these developments and some of us, most notably OS and myself if I remember correctly were much less optimistic. I made a prediction in my "Mackstradamus" persona that the freedom movement would end up hijacked by fundamentalists and the freedoms and rights that were marched and fought for would be lost.

I think that any religiously backed political system will work counter to personal freedoms because, as a general rule, Christianity and Islam are about discipline and limiting personal choice.
That works fantastic as a self improvement ideology but terrible as a political system.

While I'm not completely satisfied with this country, sure beats that area of the world.
I'm grateful. |

What strato said.
I was never a fan of the Muslim Brotherhood to begin with. Call me an evil American, but Egypt hasn't given me any problems in my life (and the United States since Carter made Isreal and Egypt kiss and make up) and therefore I liked the old regime better.

If any of y'all are interested in this topic, there's a really awesome paper called "Clicks, Cabs & Coffee Houses: Social Media & Opposition Movements in Egypt." It's by Merlyna Lim.
It does a good job detailing the history of the current revolution in Egypt. The modern revolution used social media and in-person cliques as the glue to hold a bunch of different otherwise opposed groups together enough to overthrow the government. The movement was made up of hard-line conservatives like the Muslim Brotherhood, hard-line leftists in the Egyptian Communist Party, student-run pro-democracy groups, and soccer hooligans who just wanted to throw rocks. Those groups otherwise would be at each other's necks, as they are now, but at the time they had a platform to voice their common dislike of the Mubarak dictatorship.
