As many as 100 Guantanamo Bay terror suspect detainees are to be sent to the Sate of Illinois to be housed in a state prison.

Good. Hopefully moving them to what is undisputedly U.S. territory and within U.S. judicial jurisdiction will help to fight this absurd notion that 'desperate times call for desperate measures'.
Terrorism has hurt and killed people and has damaged and destroyed things, but it has in no way directly impacted the very fabric of western liberal society the way that our own reactionary responses to it have. The abandonment of the rule of law has struck a blow to the credibility of the United States, traditionally known for its strong support of democratic and modern legal principles. We have little to fear from backwards ideologues who seek to cause random and largely inconsequential violence. They can hurt people, but they cannot hurt society- only we as citizens and free people can do that through our own negligence, and through being blinded by our own fear into accepting impositions and expediencies that circumvent proper legal processes and proceedings. I have no doubt that most of the people in Guantanamo are scum. Some of them have fought and have killed some of my brothers in the military, but it would be hideously ironic if we let ourselves compromise the very principles our entire system is set up to defend. The correct move is being made in treating these people in a proper legalistic and transparent manner. That is the very moral high ground on which we stand in waging the battles we fight against extremism. |
