Theres a huge difference between a car show and a kid in high school trying to get attention with his fart cannon. Car shows are more than 'whos got the biggest set of junk', but then you'd know that if you were a car guy. Just because someone puts a lot of work into a car doesn't mean they are trying to show off, youre making assumptions, stop it. |

It's a hobby, people put a lot of time and effort into getting their car the way they like it. When you ask them about their car, and they "get happy in the pants" that's because they get to talk to another person, who probably also loves cars (or wouldn't be there asking questions), and you get to talk technical and have a discussion with them. In the same manner that I can watch (and talk to if I want) someone do a nollie heelflip and appreciate the technical aspect to an other wise simple looking trick.

So oldPBnoobyour trying to say anyone who mods their cars are trying to compensate for a lack in other areas. LOL
Ever consider that some just like workin on their cars. Ever consider that some people cant afford to go buy a super fast car/truck/ or bike but still want to have some fun at the track on the weekend. Ever Consider that some like the challenge of seeing how much they can get outa a relitivly low performance machine. To some wrenching on their cars is fun and if you getting better performance out of it hell even better its a FUN activity. I AM a gear head always have been. Its also my career (Licensed Truck Mechanic). How bout the guys that modify stuff for better fuel economy them compensatinv for a small package tooo. After all they have shows too (if ya dont belive me look up Craig Vetter fuel challenge's). Just cause its not something you enjoy dont mean every one else is tryin to compensate for anything. Oh and just to make a point i have had over 11 vehicals now and only 2 of em i ever left stock. And NONE of em were ever in a show. And only a few were raced. |

While the compensating bit is said a little tongue in cheek and meant to be a little funny, except for guys that drive Corvettes, I do beleive that the vast majority of people that modify their cars do so in order to impress others. Be it the cutie on the corner, the fans at a race track, or rolling slow and low at the local cruise in, most of it is about showing off. Yes, it is an enjoyable hobby, I've had my share of modified cars when I was younger as well, but you all have to admit that there is even in the most pure circumstances the basic instinct to show who's faster, louder, lower etc. Competition to be better is what drives us and even in the Vetter Challenge or whatever, we are still competing to show who's best aren't we? Are submissions done anonymously? No, recognition is still given. To the victor goes the spoils.

I just enjoy a car that I can actually feel accelerate when I shift gears. Whats the joy in driving stick if the car isn't fun to drive?

Ah but without competition one would never advance/evolve. Their for the argument could be made that all competition is an effort to advance in life.
Ever stop and thing of were everything comes from. Most any acchivment or advancment in technology has come from some kinda competitive form. As the sayin goes. "if you always do what you have always done you will always get what you have always gotten" |
