I don't like cruises, but my family is developing a habit of going on them...

If I am on vacation, I want three things, one of which exists on a cruise.

1) Large, relatively open pool to swim in.
2) Sun.
3) Beach.

Cruise fails at 1 and 3.

Done the cruise ship thing with the family once (AKA not my choice) and found the whole deal annoying and out right boring.

A good Vacation to me requires the use of MY cruiser.  Hop on the Yamaha pack a few weeks of cloths strap the tent and sleeping bag to the rear seat and pick a direction and just go see this great country one kilometer at a time.
