So I went deer hunting with my dead yesterday morning. We were out there for about twenty minutes and I see three doe come walking up to the feeder about 140 yards out. I'm like "hey!" because generally I only kill doe...so I pick the largest deer of the three and nail it right through the shoulder blades. It drops instantly, nice smooth kill.

Until I get up to the feeder and realize the deer is incredibly small. Like, smaller than my great Dane. I absolutely HATE killing baby deer...and to top it all off, it's still alive. Obviously it's paralyzed, so I have to put it down. I reach down for my .44...and I had left it at home. So I get to nail a baby deer in the head point blank with a .308 bull barrel. Gotta love the dirty looks when you bring Bambi in with it's jaw missing and it's eyes bulging out from a high powered rifle bullet to the skull.

I guess I'm just a big softy, cuz I'm pretty sure hunting is over for me this year, I feel like kind of a douche. On the bright side I guess I'll have around sixty pounds of summer sausage coming my way in a couple of weeks :\

Nah, I should have but I don't have the equipment or knowledge. That's a project I want to work on next year, after paying 120 bucks to process a 40 pound deer...

But that's alot of summer sausage, and 55 of that is just to seperate meat from bone. 60 bucks for that much summer sausage isn't too bad, and they mix it with pork.

I had something similar happen last year. First light on opening day, I had a buck come up behind me. It was light enough for me to see antlers, but not be able to count tines- if I waited any more, he'd have scented me and might still be running. I dropped him with a single shot, then got up and counted two points. He was a young spike. I was pissed he was so young, but wow was he good eating.

Yeah that was the problem I had...it was just at sunup, and my dad always used to tell me as a general rule deer look much larger at break of dawn through a scope. Had I let the sun come up just a little more I would've had much better perception.

But like you said...good eats that's all that matters really.

I'd suggest learning how. It really isn't that hard at all. Just takes some time, and saves a lot of money. It helps to know someone with a meat grinder.
