My neighbor was going to join the coast guard...then he decided not to claiming "there was just too much paper work."
He's currently starting his 5th year at the community college.

my step dads in the coastguard and he has been behind the helm a few times... hes borderline retarded so i doubt its to hard to obtain a position where you can drive one of them around...
coast guard sounds awesome... all the crap you deal with in the navy but 6-8 weeks out and then your in for 6-8 weeks and every few days you stop at a resort location for a few days... its like cruising but you get to pick on the ghetto people swimming to the USA... (this post wont get me banned will it?) if you have any specific questions i can ask my step dad or one of his buddys (all E7+ with 20-30 years in) |

Well, all teasing aside, I do want to do something that would get me out to sea. The grocery store I work with has their own commercial fishing fleet, and I'm toying with the idea of seeing if I can sign on with that.
But back to the subject at hand. I'm not really liking what I'm hearing about the CG. Makes sense though. It's probably one of the more desired branches of the military. As for officer duty, I never really wanted that responsibility. But like with everything else I've ever wanted to do, I'm probably missing some crucial bit of information that I'd need to know or something... |

I just don't think I'm officer material. Plus, I'm not really in it for the money...

Always a good idea to get a 4 year degree before military. Not only will they pay most if not all of your loans, but you will get paid more. You can go in as enlisted which is the only way to get some of the lower jobs, plus when you get out, you will be instantly hireable due to your degree.

Well, that's out. I've tried 3 times to get "an education." I'm currently only going to school to stay on my dad's health insurance policy, and get training in machining. My community college has a pretty good machine shop, and a decent, well, curriculum, I guess you could call it.
I've always wanted a simple life. I don't want a lot of money, and I'd rather do a trade to earn it. Something more physical than intellectual. I'm not dumb, I just can't be motivated to do school. So being an officer is out. A 4-year college program is out. Back on the subject of ships and boats, I've also been tossing the idea of being a tugboat captain or a commercial fisherman. Freight shipping might also be interesting. See the world and whatnot. |

NNSY is taking applications in the next month or so for their apprenticeship. (takes about a year to get in)
if you can, all of the other shipyards pay more, portsmouth, pearl harbor, san deigo, and puget sound. |
