When I was first getting into paintball I was told to cock my gun before putting my CO2 on, I have always done this and am to this day not sure why this is important. (This post is intended to be read by new players and those like me who don't know why this should be done)

With a blowback mechanical gun, like a Tippmann or Spyder, the hammer in an uncocked gun rests against the valve, pushing it partially open. When you cock the gun, the hammer is pulled back and the valve closes completely.
As a result, if you screw in the tank without cocking you will immediately start leaking air through the valve until you do cock the gun.
This is harmless, but a complete waste of air.

It shouldn't just a SLIGHT, POSSIBLY leak in air. Personally I've NEVER had it happen, but it's always a possibility. Doesn't really matter too much.

So should you leave your marker cocked to keep the pressure off the little rubber paintball holder? Or is the constant tension on the spring bad and cause it to wear out faster?

I don't think that rubber paintball holder is going to be taking too much pressure. If your not using your gun leave it uncocked.

No, you should cock your marker before you air it up. When you are done playing with it for the day, store it uncocked. Leaving the marker cocked could lead to damage to the spring. As for the rubber detent, buy a few spares and keep them around. When mine failed, it inevitably failed during a renegade game 50 miles away from the nearest paintball shop.
