I'm looking at getting a new shoulder fired, semi auto .22LR. The 10/22 was the obvious choice, but I was wanting something a little different.

Someone on another forum suggested the GSG-5. It is a basic MP5 clone, in .22LR.

Now I'd prefer a real rifle, in either 5.56mm, 5.45mm, 7.62x39, .30Carbine, or even 9x19mm, but with ammo prices these days I can buy a box of 50 .22LR for the price of a single 5.56mm round.

That just makes sense to me. I haven't bought one yet, this is a file photo.

It has a similar basic looks as an MP5, with the legal barrel length encased in a cake suppressor. Legally where I live I can buy the shorter barrel one and stick a real can on it.

Now I've heard all the jokes about it being an Airsoft weapon, which we all know. But it only needs to fire a low pressure .22 round, so that's not an issue, and best many airsoft parts are useable, like scopes, stocks and forends.

I'm quite partial to the MP5A4 style with the Surefire fore end.

The .22 lacks the range of the .223's and the like, but the max ranges we shoot over is around 50m, with typical ranges being similar to IDPA style ranges. 15ish meters.

So yeah, I'm thinking $500 for the gun, $150 is for some addons including a Fakepoint, and a bucket of ammo for the same price as a real rifle.

What do you all think?

I think it was shorty.  I too want one.  We got a new house, with room for us to shoot, so I have to make the choice between a shotgun, rifle to do some long range target shooting, or something like that.  I really like the look of the GSG-5 though

Well, interesting choice.

.22 is just a silly round though.

Really? How did I miss that?

/me off to search...

Bugger, I missed the entire thread. And it was only 2 months ago.

Sorry for the re-post.

Pariel, how is .22 a silly round? It goes bang, and you can shoot it at things out to 75m.

Very nice, reminds me of a few interesting quotes I recently found:

"Firearms stand next to importance to the constitution itself. They are the
American peoples liberty teeth and keystone under independence." -
George Washington

also

"No free man shall ever be disbarred the use of arms." - Thomas
Jefferson.

Very nice though, I have personally never fired one, but a buddy of mine
has and he said it's surprisingly similar to firing an actual Mp5.

I'd put it more akin to firing a full-auto bb-gun at the state fair (where you try to shoot the center out of the target to win an x-box). 9mm Parabellum at least pushes back, .22lr makes it feel like you're shooting an airsoft gun. My 'cocker has more recoil than the GSG5.

As for WHY you would want .22lr. Well, seeing as how much larger calibers cost these days, why wouldn't you want .22lr for a fun gun like the GSG5? You're going to throw hundreds of rounds down the barrel in no time with it, so you might as well keep the cost low.

plus its good for plinking, and small game hunting. no point (or practical use) in using a 30-06 on a rabbit.

I haven't picked on up yet, that's a file photo.

I'm looking at around R4500 ($450), which is close to the price of a LM6 in 223, and more than an M1 Carbine. Almost double that of the M1.

And I like the M1's ergonomics, and it is a straight walled case, and the M1 shoots lead happily, so it is a tough call. I can reload .30 Carbine without any hassels, or I can simply open up a box of .22LR.

I've been looking for the 9mm version you suggested, but I cannot find one, and the ones I do are in the $1000 price range.

do not dismiss the ruger 10/22

an aftermarket bull barrel and a dragonuv or folding stock (not to mention the many other enhancing accesories) will be bad ass.

there is a bullpup stock that looks tactical cool also.

$450 ain't bad!!! That's less than what I paid for mine.

Yeah, when I caught wind of these... I had my name down for the first pre-orders. Got one of the first ones imported. Sure, I could've waited and grabbed a lightly used one after the novelty wore off for someone else and they decided to unload... but I couldn't wait to get my mitts on one.

LOTS of fun. I actually prefer the fact that it's 22LR. I can blow through 550rds and not even blink at the cost. The same cannot be said of ANY centerfire round. 9x19 included.
If you think 9x19 is "cheap", you're dillusional. (Or rich, take your pick). In an afternoon, can easily go thru 550rds as stated above... in 22LR, the current replacement cost is $14. In the cheapest 9x19 available... $105.

If you're looking for a 9x19 MP5 clone (Ford/Monk), legal to own without a Class III... then you're looking for a Vector or Bobcat make. Not terrible, but no where near the quality of HK, and it will set you back $1500 if you can find one.

So... rifle with an initial cost of less than $500, and a per-round feed charge of $0.03?
Or a rifle with an initial cost of $1500 and a per-round feed charge of $0.20? (or more)
No brainer for me. Having a rifle doesn't do me any good if I cannot afford to actually USE it.

Kayback... did you have the option to get the SBR version (no fake suppressor) without any further restrictions? I would've gladly gone that route if I didn't have to pay the $200 tax stamp and file for Class II. Then slap a collapsible stock on it.

Be wary of the fakepoints out there. I had a GP121... which worked great for a little while. But on my way to the range one day, my soft gun case must've got banged around... and the switch broke somehow. I understand that 'you get what you pay for' and my investment of $40 was far less than what a real Aimpoint goes for... but I was hoping it'd last a little longer than it did.
I'm back to iron sights.

Yeah we don't have any restrictions here on barrel length ( they make it hard enough to get one in the first place) and suppressors are 100% legal without any paperwork. Picked one up for my Colt 22 simply by walking into the shop, slapping the 22 on the counter and walking out a week later with it custom built and machined to match the weapon profile and finish.

In any decent weekend of shooting I fire off 200-300 .45ACP sometimes as much 9x19mm, the only problem is it takes ages to reload that much brass. It is time consuming, but I literally haul buckets of ammo to the range with me. But that's to feed my Glock and 1911, Like I and Shorty said feeding it .22 is a joke. 50 for 1 leaves no thinking room Besides 500 rounds of .22 can fit in one pocket of my rangebag, not fill the whole thing.

For Fakepoints, I actually have an Aimpoint Comp sitting around not doing anything at the moment. The previous owner said it had issues, and I actually bought it for my Tippy, but I ran it on my .45ACP for a while and it held the zero perfectly, so I'll probably run that.

I was shooting a borrowed 9x19mm Indian made copy of an H&K MP5 the other day, retail price was R30 000. Thats around $3000. For that price I can buy 5 GSG-5's and enough ammo to bury a 5 year old.

Like I said, the .22 fits the role I have for it (mainly plinker) perfectly.

I need to get my Class II/III or just move next to Kayback. Either way, I'm drooling right now.
