I have a question about this "bailout". Both presidential candidates say that the companies should have to pay the money back. Would I be correct in infering that a "loan of  700 billion dollars incurs alot of interest, so shouldn't that interest go to the citizens of your country?

dude! that's soo much money that there is no need to live off the interest. that's sooo much money, that even if you greatly splurged on everything that you could ever want, you still wouldn't place a dent in it.

for some reason "$1,000,000" by the Barenaked Ladies just popped into my head.

One trillion dollars can buy a lot of bling
One trillion dollars can buy most anything
One trillion dollars buying bullets, buying guns
One trillion dollars in the hands of killers and thugs

Fthe world
A lot of people gonna die tonight
Fthe world
Kill em all

One trillion dollars in Africa, Iraq
One trillion dollars and itís never coming back
One trillion dollars can buy some bad-ass drugs
One trillion dollars makes me wanna kill myself

Until the sun comes from the sky
Until the sun comes over
This world is no more
Until the sun comes from the sky
And all the people are distressed underground

One trillion dollars can buy a heart and soul
One trillion dollars buying nations of the world
One trillion dollars could make the fat lady sing
One trillion dollars, what a bs useless thing.

Close enough?
Que pasa?

Until pirates murdered you and took your boat.

Dude, I'd have $700 bil. My boat would have some "mods" done, I'm sure.

The interest you would get from that would not total to $700 billion by the end of your life. You might as well spend the money yourself.

I would build a fly-in neighborhood and buy a house and hangars for all of the 20+ aircraft I would get.

Even living extremely EXTREMELY lavishly, you could never spend 700 billion dollars.

Yes.

Details are hard to come by, but the "bailout" is actually anything but.

In AIG's case, the government will end up owning 80% of the company at a firesale price - the shareholders basically lose everything.

For the other companies it is unclear what the equity involvement will be, but overall the basic idea is that the government will, though a combination of debt and equity, lend its liquidity to the troubled companies, which is what they need more than anything.

This liquidity will come at a price - either through ownership of the companies, or high interest loans.  But this "bailout" is by no means a gift.  It is an investment - a risky investment, to be sure, but an investment nevertheless.

And this is why it has to be the government - if these companies were smaller, there would be plenty of lenders/investors lining up to do this same "bailout" - but there are none that can handle the vast amounts of money involved.

The US government is many things - among those, it is one of the world's largest banks.
