I completely agree with the first part of the sentence but do not with the second part. Since when do I have to be able to communicate with others around me?

Also at a previous job, I was paid an extra $600 dollar a year, at the American Taxpayer's expense because I could speak to people in a language other than English. The government sector that I worked for figured that the best way to serve their constituent was to speak in the language they chose, not which was forced upon them.

And Choopie, I am talking about learning a few simple words and phrases, not the entire language. Grammar and syntax do not have to be perfect to communicate.
