Daytona Beach Shores Police Officer Mike Schoenbrod says he was patrolling the Congo River miniature golf course early Thursday morning, when he noticed the teenagers had climbed into the alligator pool.  Schoenbrod says the men were trying to lure a gator out of the pool with palm frond and duct tape.

The teenagers ran when they saw Officer Schoenbrod, but were caught a short time later.

Police say Jesse Ramos, 18, George Grampp, 18, Craig Devries, 19, Eric Tatki, 19, and Thomas Shaughnessy, 19, are all students from Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach.

Police say the teenagers confessed that three of them were posted as look outs, while the other two tried to grab the gator.

The students were booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail with a bond of $1000 each.  They all posted bond Thursday and were released.

The alligator was not hurt.  Congo River says it will conduct an inventory of their animals to make sure none are missing or injured.

I've seen them around campus. My roommate is acquainted with all of them. According to him, they're not too bright.

What the article isn't telling you is that they're all in the frat Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and that the frats have been up to stupid crap for the past few weeks for their new members. While this isn't part of it, I'm sure their interpretations of that craziness went terribly wrong.

All I know about it now is that the administration must be extremely pissed right now. Chances are, SAE is going to be kicked off campus as a supported student group.

Last year some time I read about an animal preserve in Australia that had a missing alligator or crocodile. They had named the beast Mr. Crankypants and couldn't imagine why anybody would bother with the trouble of taking it. They found it abandoned in a nearby swamp two or so days later.

It really is dumb.

Honestly, why would you risk charges of theft and all that, when they could have gone to any of the local lakes or retention ponds and nabbed one the good old-fashion way.

It is not exactly hard to find an alligator around here.

Oh Lord.

Well, SAE got the boot from your collegiate neighbors two semesters ago. They were known as being the dumbest of the frats on campus for a long time, and they they got busted. This is where the lovely gem of "mangled hot-dogs" came from.
