Best Way to Burn .avi Files to DVD

So I have a lot of .avi movies to burn to dvd. I am looking for the best quality possible.

Up to now, I have been using Cucusoft AVI/MPEGtoDVD. Is has worked allright but has left much to be desired. I did my first movie encoded at the default 24 point something frames per second. This produced a movie that was noticeably laggy. Next, i tried doing the next NTSC format up, 29 point something frames per second. This worked a lot better but you could just notice that it was a bit too fast. Either way, there were inconsistancies. Every little while, the screen would screw up for a couple seconds. It was annoying.

So I am looking for what programs you guys use to burn these files to dvd. Also, what formats you guys use and the write speed at which you burn at.

On the extraordinarily rare occasion that I would want to burn an AVI file (Incorrect nomenclature, the codec used is more important, XViD, DiVX?), I would use Nero, on the slowest possible burn speed.

I am referring to quality of the video files, not so much in terms of errors...
