Took spanish from 7th-11th grade, can barely answer/understand basic sentences. Biggest waste of my life. I haven't gotten anything out of it, except new ways to cheat.

I took it from 7th through 12th grade, even went through the AP class and took the state college equivalence exam to get college credit for it. To this day I couldn't tell you how I got college credit for that class. The teacher was horrible, and I was lazy. |

Argentina, and the Argentine accent is heavily influenced by neighboring Brazill. That's why I'm able to understand (Brazilian) Portuguese almost perfectly. The grammar and word roots are often identical, but the pronunciation (particularly in Brazilian Portuguese) is pretty crazy. It's strange, I could read a passage in portuguese and translate it into English or Spanish, but I wouldn't be able to read it aloud in the original portuguese. |

I took the absolute minimum amount of Spanish in highschool. My teacher freshman year was unstable and not a very good teacher. I think I may have played a role in her decision to retire early. The next year we had the chorus teacher teach Spanish and no longer had a French program. She was horrible, nobody learned anything. I sat in the back of the classroom and played chess, which was an improvement on my pass time freshman year, which was killing rodents with my textbook, playing mind games with the teacher, and dumping stuff into the heater that would make the classroom stink over vacation.
I can still understand a decent amount of Spanish, I think I learned better working with a bunch of illegal immigrants at McDonalds. Edited by rednekk98 - 26 February 2008 at 9:09am |

This sounds starkly similar to my high school Spanish classes. In the 4 years of high school, we had one teacher retire, she was replaced by another woman who was not really bright. She didn't last a year, and quit after a few months. They replaced her with a beautiful long term sub, who wasn't able to take the sexual harassment that she got from a lot of the guys in my class as well as the class below us. She was replaced with another sub who didn't even SPEAK Spanish, but was really abusive to the kids. That hack lasted until the end of my second year, when they got rid of her, brought back the woman who had retired in the first place for a few months until they hired this new guy, an ex FBI agent who was brilliant, but a poor teacher. He lasted about 6 or 7 years here until he was released last year. He was replaced at the beginning of this year by a new woman who seems to be turning the joke of a language program around. |
