I doubt many of you will have the patience to read that so here's the short version.


Someone says cops should not be allowed to have MP5's, that they are too "overpowered".

No one wants police to be armed with squirt guns or sling shots. But an MP5 submachine gun? Navy Seals carry MP5s. So do soldiers in the Army's elite Delta Force and Britain's counter-terrorist Special Air Service. The German-made MP5 is a rapid-fire gun, equipped with a clip that can hold 15 or 30 bullets. It's also small and light enough for the kind of parachute or underwater attacks that special operations soldiers excel in. Why would a bunch of suburban cops need a gun like that?

Almost every town in northern New Jersey dispatched police to SWAT training and then equipped them with military-style helmets, military machine guns and even military night-vision goggles and camouflage uniforms. Yes, you heard that right: camouflage in the suburbs. Who are we kidding?

Really? Hiding from bad people? Who does that?!

Cops are not soldiers. They're supposed to solve crimes. Wayne police need to solve a mystery -- and possible crime. But after that, why not just unload the gun altogether?
