Absolutely true. But it is easier to smile, giggle, and let it go with a poster that is obviously still in Jr. High than with an actual adult that should know better. EDIT - darn. paged myself again. Edited by Clark Kent - 28 May 2007 at 11:26pm |

I can honestly say that I would do the exact same thing in your position. Maybe it's because of the raging teenage hormones though. |

Honestly I'd just let it slide. What does it matter to me that some guy doesnt like my bumper sticker or something? He's entitled to think what he wants.

Generalizations, Clark...please. First off I was still seated on the bike, again expierience and training dictated this young man would have no desire to "step outside", and if he did I do have the ability again through expierience and training to defuse the situation. Clark you are smart enough to know that this young man could have been in real trouble if it was not me, and someone more prone to violence. I still do not understand your adversion to social behavior correction, my silence would have emboldened this young man to possible more outragous behavior directed where and at who else.
It is the point that I was not "Billy Bad A.." I was attempting to get an understanding with the individual that spontainious stupidity can get you hurt. And I think the exercise was taken to heart, and even girlfriend will now possibly detere future stupidity on his part, for finally someone stood up to him, and they thankfully skated this time. I officially declare "Social Behavior Correction" to be a proper euphemism for "Sinking to another's level." Carry on. |

Kinda like "Commodities Relocation Specialist" as a euphenism for truck driver.
Yes Clark, due to upbringing and yes a defined generational difference to acceptable social behavior that we "old folk" tend to insert ourselves into situations that most today "let slide", and as evident in the social behavior problems and I do not want to get involved attitude we are encountering today, I do believe the new approach is not as effective as the ways of old. |

My general point is that immaturity should not be met with immaturity. That is a cycle that does not help anything. Do you seriously think the kid OS chased walked away from the incident thinking "Oh wow, I respect the military now!" Or, do you think he assured the stereotype in his head that military personnel are hot-headed neanderthals? I fail to see the point of anything he did, other than to sink to the level of an angst filled teenager. |

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but the invoking of first amendment rights, and the manner in which they were brought into the argument, leads me to believe that some people don't understand exactly what rights one has in our society.
As pointed out above, the 1st Amendment is a two-way street. Someone has the right to make disparaging comments about my family, but I do have the right to respond by pointing out their obvious simian ancestry. If it escalates beyond that point, that's when an ugly fact will become apparent: If there is no law enforcement presence in the vicinity, one's rights are enforced only by the individuals ability to physically defend those rights. OS exercised his right to not put up with juvinile BS. Fortunately, it didn't escalate. I give him points for considering/evaluating possible escalation before reacting. I also think stratoaxe is correct is stating that a lot of the reaction to this post has more to do with the poster than the post itself. QUOTE=choopie911]He's entitled to think what he wants.[/QUOTE] Absolutely. He's also entitled to share what he thinks. And whoever he shares it with is entitled to respond with their opinion. Exactly. A grown man acted like an angst filled teen, then bragged about it. About your other stuff, it is silly and off topic. The 1st amendment has nothing to do with it, I agree. Maturity has everything to do with it. |

No, but I'm certain 5 years from now when he sees another person from the military, he'll think twice before yelling insults. The kid bluffed, OS called it. Granted it wasn't the most mature of responses, it certainly worked. |

We've proven with animals that when they see different actions lead to certain reactions, they assume that if they repeat a certain action it will have a certain reaction. If a monkey pushes a red button he'll get nothing, but if he pushes a blue one he'll get food.
I don't think its too difficult a concept for this kid to grasp. If he doesn't, then someday Darwin will smile at him. |

Exactly. Unfortunately it's being blown completely out of proportion because it's OS. I applaud that he had the fortitude to stand up for himself, while I disagree with the "meet me on the playground after school" attitude, this kid was obviously a mindless jerk who needed to be shown some respect for people who serve their country.

This made me giggle. OS, you are so arrogant that you make ME look humble. I guess all those other violent incidents of the history of the world were always provoked by guys without the "training and experience" to correctly evaluate the threat...? Truth is, OS, everybody thinks they are a badass, including you. Yet there is always somebody tougher out there who doesn't look the part. You got lucky this time - next time, the guy will be an 1337 ninja, and you and the horse you rode in on will get poked full of ninja stars. It isn't hard to think of a bunch of seriously bad people that weren't taken seriously by others at the time.
What do you think I am doing right now?
