So I had an ingrone toenail. Not a big deal right? Wrong
I went to the doctor-man, and he says, "Actually, you have 2 ingrone toenails, one on each foot." Great. So he starts the novacaine, which was suprisingly awful. It felt like he was snaking a pencil through my toe and trying to make it pop out the top of my foot. Once I was all numb, he just goes to town and rips both toenails off. Then he starts scraping around in there and says, "Oh, looks like you have a nasty sist in here. I'll just remove that too." He goes ahead with that and makes a nasty, bloody pulp out of my right big toe. I couldn't feel any of it, but just the sound alone was enough to make anyone want to scratch their ears off. Then, he started poking around in the other gaping wound he created on my left big toe. Apparently, the ingrone nail got infected and he had to remove some tissue. Alright, great, whatever. By the way, I couldn't see any of this going on because they put a little curtian in front of my knees. I guess because they didn't want me to see what was going on. So they wrap everything up in gause and that medical tape and send me home. I was told the novacaine would last at least 2 or 3 hours. That was a lie. About ten minutes after I get out of there I'm in agony. Thank god they gave me some pain meds. That was yesterday. This morning, while I was walking down the stairs, I stubbed my toe . Oh my god. Now I know what real pain is. I hope all this makes sense, because I'm kind of in my own world of codine right now, but still, foot surgery is bad. |

Ugh, that's a rough go man. Sorry to hear that. Good luck with the healing process.
Have they given you instructions on how to treat and clean the wounds while they heal? |

I had that same surgery done, but it was only on one toe. They just stuck my toe like 4 times with the novacaine, then he went to work on my toe. He clipped like a thrid of the nail off, then he jammed a cupid with some sort of acid on it into my toe and killed the germinal matrix that creates the toenail.
I got to watch the whole time though. It was sort of cool watching a complete stranger digging around inside my toe with a medical grade q-tip then prescribing me codeine for a booboo that only hurt for about a day. |

Thats rough man. I had an ingrown toenail on both of my big toes, but luckily, my fixed the non-surgery way. I had to clip a V slip in the middle of the toenails, and it grew back normally. I got really lucky.

Eeek, no fun =\
I've always had issues with ingrown toenails on my right big toe. I was glad when I finally went to the doctor to have him cut them out. Before that I would sit on the couch with some rubbing alcohol to keep everything clean and a tiny pair of scissors that fit under the nail. After that you appreciate novicane. ![]() Edited by Darur - 28 December 2006 at 2:24pm |

Been there, done that. Five times (yes, FIVE times) on my left big toe, three times on the right. Last time in for the right, I finally got a doc who did the acid treatment, and haven't had any problems since. Right one's going bad again, so I know what's coming.
I know it has to be fixed... I'm just not looking forward to it.

I had one taken out last year, and the needle insertion was awful. It felt like the doctor was jamming a red hot something or other through the most dense tissue he could find. But once the shots were over, I had no pain afterwards, even after the meds wore off. That might be because they wore off the following day. I got it done again a couple moths ago, different toe, different doctor. This time, the needles weren't NEARLY as painful, in fact only one instance hurt (hit a nerve.) Looking back though, I don't think he gave me novacaine like the first doc did. So, the surgery went on as it had the first time, but he put a sponge in the gap, which amounts to about 1/3 of the big nail. He said this would absorb any fluid, yadda yadda. Then he gave me the same directions as you, and he kicked me out the door at 6 PM on a friday with no meds. Bad deal right there. So I'm on my way to dinner, and everything is still numb. I get to the restaurant, and it starts hurting. The pain was akain to someone tying a rope around your toe and attaching the other end to a ruck and trying to drive away. It got worse and worse as the night went on, and nothing helped, except if I layed flat on the ground. I don't know why that helped, but it did. The next day it felt better, until I tried to put my shoes on. The pain came back, but much worse. This time, laying on the ground did not fix it. My dad found some Soma and gave that to me. A couple days later I noticed that my toe was draining pus. Great. I could still see the sponge on there, and I decided to pull it out. I did, and underneath was a thick layer of milky white pus. I cleaned that all out, and everything dried up within a day and now everything is fine. I cannot imagine what stubbing it must have felt like. Edited by hybrid-sniper - 28 December 2006 at 2:42pm |

I got a sliver of metal in my foot about a year ago and ended up getting a planter's wart. I dismissed it as a callous and let the thing get progressively worse for about 8 months.... Needless to say, that was one of the worst ideas ever, it grew about 3/4s of the way through my foot,
The surgeon had to use an Electric Knife to cut it out. What it basically was is a scalpel that uses an electric current to heat up the blade. The doctor was sloppy with the needle and almost went through my entire foot, and then the painkiller didn't work. In the end, they had to take a HUGE chunk out of my foot, and then they decided to cauterize the wound with silver nitrate sticks. I feel for you man, just try to stay off of them as much as possible and keep them clean! Feet can be disgusting. |

I don't get ingrown toenails. I clip my nails before it gets that bad.
In way of toes though, I slit my pinky toe open two Fourth of July's ago. It took 5 stitches to sew it up and I had to ride an hour to the hospital. It sucked. Edited by Hysteria - 28 December 2006 at 3:28pm |

So yeah, the vinegar thing didn't turn out so well. The whole 1/3 vinegar
didn't really "feel right" when I put my feet in, so I changed it to 1/16 vinegar. That worked a lot better, but I think I'm just going to call the office and ask for an antibiotic instead of dealing with some bad pain 4 times a day for a half hour. |
