Sergeant is E-5.

The army regularly sends kids to boot camp as Specialists (E-4). I see them all the time on Leonard Wood, and one of them got surgery at the same time I did.

Two completely different  branches with different missions.

I dont know of any army soldiers in boot camp as E-4's.  You don't make rank until you're out of boot camp, if you get really good on the ASVAB and max your PT test, you can make E-2, and if you're really lucky, perhaps Sergeant, but I've yet to hear of an E-4.

Actually, you can get up to E-3 before basic, one of the guys in my current unit did just the other day. But that is as far as you can get untill after basic.

They do put kids through basic as specialists.

As I was saying, I was talking to one who got surgery at the same time as me.

The Airforce doesn't blow anything up, unless you are an officer and a pilot.

Not completely accurate / true.  There are a few enlisted AFSC's (air force specialty codes) that are operators.  Try googling the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron located at Hurlburt Field, Florida. (plus theres always EOD, but ya gotta be a little crazy for that kinda work).  Civil Engineers also blow stuff up (google "red horse air force")

For the original question of which branch, it depends why you are joining and your knowing your strengths and weaknesses.  Are you in it for action or an education?  MANY variables to consider.

He is a reserve right now, but he has been ranking faster than my cousin who is in the Marines and had joined sooner.

pay only depends on rank and job. example. explosive ordnance disposal get paid more because they are crazy and no one wants to do it. also promotion may be faster because of room available in his MOS field. Marines take longer because you need to be a certain rank for a certain time in order to be promoted. then you need to qualify. also. some MOS' have a lot less room for promotion and therefore you may not get promoted fast at all. like the infantry. slow moving field since a lot of Marines are in the infantry.

Hey,

Actually, EOD is very popular because of the extra pay. We're Marines...Marines do a lot for a little.

At any rate, the reason the Army has fast promotion is because they're frickin' nasty. No offense, but they are. Sure, you may be a Sergeant, but that'd be equivelent to maybe a salty Lance Corproal or Corporal perhaps in the Corps. (As far as ability).

Good luck!
