It's hard not to succumb to mainstream anymore. Most of the lesser-known bands I listened to and saw while in, and immediately after college eventually made it big time, and in doing so... the 'magic was lost'. I see a good deal of bands listed here not falling into the category requested. Since when is Oasis and Foo Fighters "less known" or "less popular"? Jay-Z? Gee... who is he? I never hear his songs or see his videos. I'd say a vast majority of people have heard of these artists, and they have huge fan bases. If the band you listed here in this thread has/had a video played on MTV during the daylight hours more than once, they're no longer "less known".
I lost track and no longer keep up. I can't anymore. All the "new" bands and names I end up hearing from my brother-in-law, who somehow does manage to keep up. But even then, it isn't long before these bands make headlines and then fall out of the "unknown" category. Saw My Morning Jacket, don't remember if I saw People In Planes anywhere. Lesser known for now... but for how much longer? Heard of Incubus? Of course you have. I saw them twice in a dank old bar in Philly the size of my current cubicle. Sat in a booth with my friends and Brandon and laughed at the band they opened for (Reef). As they got more popular, they played bigger venues like the Electric Factory. Nowadays, the music is less edgy and they play stadiums. I no longer go to their shows. They were unknown once, as were most bands in their infancies, but no longer. I miss the days of seeing small shows in small grungy places. Saw a lot of good bands, some have pressed on, some have since faded. It was nice to keep up with the non-mainstream music. These days, it almost always becomes mainstream at some point.
I still don't understand why the emo crowd decided to take on SDRE as their own? SDRE does not consider themselves Emo. |

SDRE is more indie/emo, but is still considered as one of the most influential 2nd-wave emo bands. Their music is characterized by quiet more introspective parts, leading up to louder, faster buildups with "twinkly" guitar parts in between- definately characteristics of 80's - 90's emo before it sold out and became the cesspool that it is today. (edit- and have you heard their lyrics? Pretty depressing at times. Usually not very happy music.) There are a lot of bands that don't like the genres they get put into, that doesn't change what they are though. Also, SDRE wasn't exactly 'early' emo. I guess relatively speaking, they could be considered early compared to today's crappy pop-emo. Really early emo could be considered to be a lot of bands from the late 80's DC hardcore punk scene. A lot of stuff on Dischord records and others- Fugazi, Rites of Spring, Moss Icon, Embrace, 1.6 Band, Dag Nasty, etc. /rant Edited by Benjichang - 30 November 2006 at 10:43am |
