If you foil (a+b)(a-b) you get a^2-b^2, the +ab and -ab going away to that special place, so that breaks down correctly into (a+b)(a-b), and the other side, ab-b^2 is also equal to b(a-b).

I'm sure I've seen this before, but I'm going to play with it anyway. I need a bit of brain work this morning.

Edit: Ok... pardon my early morning thinking. I haven't even had a Coke yet.

a=b, so we can replace at will

a = a
a^2 = aa
a^2 - a^2 = aa - a^2
(a + a)(a - a) = a(a - a)
a + a = a
2a = a

The equation is true if a = 0, and you cannot divide by 0, therefore, you cannot remove "a" at the end, or the "a - a" between the forth and fifth steps for that matter, concluding that 2 = 1. 2 = 1 is not logical, so a step back concludes that "a" can only equal 0, and also points out the flaw in removing "a - a."

The line of thinking behind this presupposes that "a" is a non-zero value, which it cannot be. My thinking may not be up to snuff here, but it's my best guess this morning.

Thanks. I'm glad I remembered enough to do that. I haven't entirely gone soft in the head.

Yeah, my schools really messed up this year. Our first football game is that first day we go back. The sports rally is also before school even starts. One of our dances is like a week after it starts.

well yeah, what did you expect?  you care enough to go into a higher level class, they care just enough to go into regular/lower level class.  of course you did better than them

Reif..

So I'm just double checking myself...

The problem is factored and looks like this:

(a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b)

Even if a and b are nonzero numbers, a-b=0, because a=b. The problem is in the next step, when the equation goes from:

(a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b)
to this:
a+b=b

Since (a-b)=0, and you cannot divide by zero, this is the illegal step. Therefore, 2 =/= 1.
