For me it doesn't really seem to distract me more, but I usually start paying attention to the road and not the conversation and start to fade out of it.

It's different, because while having a conversation on a cell phone, trying to hear the person is harder, and you're more intent on listening and trying to figure out what they just said on the cell phone, rather than driving, because the signal isn't always the best, also you can only hear out of one small part, which you're really focused on that, rather than driving. Also, you're trying to keep the cellphone up on your ear, as well as driving. Doing that all at the same time, your mind will tend to drift off into the conversation that is going through one ear, and all that muti-tasking can be bad. Now if someone is in the car, it's a whole different story, you just listen, you don't try to hold up something to hear them, you just sit there normally driving, while staring ahead. This is really easy, and you can hear them clearly, so you don't have to sit there and think about what they just said. |

I had to do a speech in public speaking on this, and a study I found had been done on drivers in multiple countries with sensors and cameras in the cars over six months. They found that talking on a cell phone slowed reaction time very badly. In some cases, it made reaction times slower than your average drunk driver, causing more running through traffic lights and more rear-enders. Also, the accident rate while talking on the phone went way up, and the hands free sets don't help much.
I won't talk on the phone while I'm driving. Some people can, but the majority can't. And the majority of people who can't seem to think that they can, and don't notice that they drive like crap while they're doing it because they're not paying attention. |

I dont get that into the phone conversations if im driving, and they
are normally short because the person on the other end can usually tell
im not really paying attention to them.

In my area we recently had a woman run over two small children on US1 while talking on her cell phone... You can't tell me it had nothing to do with it. If she were paying attention to what she was supposed to be doing instead of running her mouth, those two kids would have went home that day. i hope to see driving while talking on a cell outlawed in ALL states real soon!

You're supposed to drive with both hands. Nobody here can say that they have just as much control with one as they do two, because it's just not true.

i had a 5 speed escort and i had no problem shifting, talking on the phone, eating a burger, and drinking a soda at the same time...you just gotta find somewhere to set the soda, drive with your knees, and dont actually hold the shifter...just sorta bump it around with your burger hand... it works...but not well |

If you define cowardice as running away at the first sign of danger, screaming and tripping and begging for mercy, then yes, Mr. Brave man, I guess I'm a coward.

On a trip a few years ago we passed this guy driving between to semi's while talking on his phone and reading, all at night with his dome light on. If he had had something to eat and some sleeping pills he'd have been set.

I never talk on a phone while driving. Not worth the risk.

If you are too stupid to know which needs more attention - the road or the conversation - you deserve to wreck.
I really don't see how it is that hard. I for one can text message and drive at the same time, and quite well at that, so if you can't simply hold a conversation and drive it is rather sad. Newport, I honestly do have just as much control with one hand. I have my hand at the top of the wheel and when I need to turn I turn with my palm. Hard to explain, but not to do. |

I only drive with one hand anyway I just palm the wheel. but I also dont own a phone.
The thing the freaks me out is people reaching over and rolling down there passenger window. it freaks me out to not see anybody driving a car when its in the other lane coming towards you. |
