So every good woodball player is by your definition a sniper.

FLUSH OUT YOUR HEADGEAR NEWGUY

Every woodplayer with an ounce of skill, endevours to take his shot from a good covered and concealed position. the days of standing out in the open in line in colorfull uniforms, and firing back and forth left after the Franco-Prussian War, when Infantry began to get behind cover, hide themselves and shoot back at the enemy.

Assuming that a team has good comm's,  a "sniper" is much more valuable laying in the weed's quietly feeding good intel for 3 hours rather than taking pot-shot's 3 or 4 time's in 3 hours.

Yeah I'm a sniper too when I lay in ambush and proceed to dump a full hopper on an insertion at 20 bps.

Are sniper's in paintball effective in pb? NO.  Can someone call themself a sniper in pb?  sure.  Role play is/can be a big part of the game for some.

And according to your definition, if I'm playing speedball, and moved to a bunker unseen, snap shoot a guy with one shot, and they still don't know where I am, then I'm a sniper? Lol, I don't think so. Also, according to your definition, then every basic infantry man is pretty much a sniper. In vietnam, when the NVC or whoever would set up an ambush, they'd have all their infantry with AK's hiding in bushes, concealed. According to you, that would make them all snipers. Don't think so.

You should read the past couple of pages. You'd find out that a sniper must also be free from retaliation (as in, out of range of an assault rifle, M16/AK). They can take the shot, and not worry about return fire.

It's all semantics in many ways. Speedball doesn't use the same terms as woodsball or scenario games or military exercises. An ambush is an ambush, usually a team effort, whereas, though snipers sometimes work in teams, their tactics are meant to harrass.

Snipers always worry about return fire, a great many snipers have been killed by it. There is no place one can shoot from and  be free of retaliation. You might take a 300 meter shot only to get shot by another enemy soldier who walked up near your position to take a leak.

I am a retired US ARMY Infantryman, Airborne, Ranger, Air Assault, Pathfinder, and Sniper qualified, combat vet X3, avid woodsball paintballer, avid airsofter, and I do believe I have a better understanding of Mil-Sim play than many here care to believe or want to.

Armed with knowledge and expierience over a "hollywood concept".

Original member OMHW, a Nationally recognized scenario Team, played all over country against all types of players, on fields I do not know or play on regurlarly, so can reference my opinion on play and styles, based on a larger expierience base than a local playing at his local field which he knows, against known opponants who react and play in a known fashion repeatedly.

Once they saw us we eventually got eliminated, I'm good but not 2 on 150 good. Anyway, the point of my story is that none of the players (mostly new) on our side took any of the ground that we covered, they just left us all alone on the other side of the field. My girlfriend was in this game and she dashed with us but got into a piece of cover at mid field. It was a flatbed truck with plywood sidewalls that had mouse holes cut in it to shoot out of. Once my brother and I were eliminated we had a perfect view of her from the sidelines. She pinned down half the field from that truck for 4/5ths the game, and was getting eliminations. Eventually, some of our players made there way down the field but never passed the truck. I was on the sideline with these kid's parents yelling out encouragements, while the brats shoot there high ROF markers at nothing. I was hollering for them to move up, as was she being in the most forward position and a good one at that. Finally the game clock was running out, so she moved up alone, got a couple more eliminations, then was eliminated by a kid that never moved up the whole game. The game of course ended in a stale mate, because both sides had players that never even saw each other by the time the clock ran out. So, for you new playing "paintball snipers" on a rec field, I sense cowerdice and it hurts your teammates who are trying to get game progress made. Mom and dad buy them a high dollar marker to give them an "edge" and they never learn how to play. I guess I should expect that on a rec field. Also the old overweight men who splurge on themselves because they don't want to move or run and like shooting little newbie kids. The latter is my favorite to bunker, if it comes to that.

Very well said  and I've had the same thing happen to me MANY a time because of some newbie sniper guys.

I had run myself into a position once which if I had some people moving up to help out we could have won the game in under a minute.    And all the kids on my team  just sat there.  The ones with their flatlines and  full auto  and all this and all that,  they just sat there.  I had been holding off 4 guys while yelling at them to get a move on but no,  they wanted to "snipe"  all 7 of them.
So  I decided  that it was stupid just to sit there so I charged them,  hit 2 and was eliminated.       And then it was once again,  a stale mate.

Ok,  call yourself a sniper,  go ahead and TRY to snipe somebody.

For some reason when i read what some of you guys say, if i were new at paintball i would think that everyone except for a select few call themselves paintball snipers. To tell you the truth i play all over NJ whether its at a regulated field like cousins or top gun or outlaw fields... there might be one new guy (first time playin) say something about being a sniper. The rest of the guys go out and have fun. Also because these guys with tippmanns and stuff stay back and shoot full auto doesnt mean they are trying to be a sniper. I can tell you for about the first 3-4 days i played, i stayed back because i was afraid to get hit. Why cant it be that reason or another reason... not because they stayed back to be snipers... pshh

Heh man I wish I could play at that field,  newbies who DON'T call themselves snipers??

Down here that's unheard of.   Every single  newb  I've played with calls themselves a sniper.  ALL of them.   And they  sit in the back,  yes,  afraid to be hit  and when you  ask them what they're doing they say "sniping,  see that guy down there? I almost hit him!"

Sniping is HITTING the guy,  not almost.  The most these sniper guys do is sit back,  slow the attack a little bit and then get their wussy sniping butts handed to them on a platter.    Hey,  I tried to be a sniper on my first match  and found out that it just doesn't work.   You can't shoot farther then the other people, you can't hit them on your first try from 150 feet,  so why call yourself a sniper?

I think everything to be said on this subject has been said. This thread should be left as a reference to any one who wants to know about sniping in paintball (there will be lots of them) There is no need to add your 800 word opinion unless you are sure it has not been covered.

Please stop this insanity.

Set your watch, after this thread finally dies, another newby will once again follow this path, resurrecting this one with another lame defense of a concept, or watch "Enemy at the Gates" and feel compelled to proclaim himself a sniper in his next posting, because he hides and hopes and fires at extreme range, and now must justify his cowardice on the playing field.

Poll seems to have gotten "chicago syndrom", so lets go with the result and state.....THERES NO SNIPING IN PBALL
thats the American Way.
