    Posted: 04 August 2005 at 1:31am

This is kind of sad, but I haven't really kept up with PC games for a while now, and I've become stupid. So I saw an old game for $10 the other day and picked it up (Medal of Honor Allied Assault), and so I started checking out some other games, and eventually came to Far Cry. I install it, get it going, and voila-the actually suckiness of my Intel graphics card shows through. It doesn't support the pixel shading in Far Cry, and so I have black water and multicolored surfaces. So I'm going to buy a card this week, and I need some help. For reference I've got a -

Pentium 4 2.4G

512 MB RAM

80G Hard Drive

Worthless PCI motherboard...

So I need a good (and CHEAP) PCI card...nothing fancy, just something to run games like Battlezone and Far Cry. I'm not a serious gamer by any means, so I don't need a $400 GeForce or anything. Any suggestions?

I'll get a new board eventually...in fact, I'll probably get a new PC eventually. But I need a quick fix in order to play some higher-end games (namely the one that's eating almost 5 gig of my hard drive right now ).

Isn't that the only 128mb pci card available?

I honestly think you should spend around 300 bucks and buy yourself a new mobo and 6600/6600gt. It would suit you much better in the long run.

Anything ATI over 128mb will do justice on today's games.

A nvidia card with 128mb could run Half life 2 equally well. A 6600gt is a much better card than a 9800. Also, I think he has a pci slot, not AGP.

Buy a new mobo and buy a Geforce 6600GT.  The 6600GT should cost around $150-$250 depending which company you chose from.

He doesn't want to spend a lot and 512mb will suffice. I have a 6800 128mb  with 2.6ghz Intel and 512mb and it runs Half Life 2 on Medium and High with good framerates.

You sure you do not have an AGP slot? You have a P4 there should be an AGP slot. It will be the 1st slot below the CPU and is usualy gray in color.

Picture of AGP slot

Yup go for the Geforce 6600GT 128meg. Runs just as fast as a 256meg card.

PCI video cards suck. If you're going to get a new mobo with AGP, and don't want to spend a ton and want to run older games, go with an ATI 9600, pretty cheap nowadays.
